MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Tall City Black Gold has hired former standout Texas Tech wide receiver, Rodney Blackshear, as their head coach for the inaugural season.
Blackshear played wide receiver for the Red Raiders from 1987 to 1991. He led the team in receiving yards in his final two years in Lubbock. After his time with Texas Tech, he played seven years in the Arena Football League, where he played on both sides of the ball as a receiver and a defensive back. His best year was in 2001, when he helped the Grand Rapids Rampage win the Arena Bowl.
Blackshear then transitioned to coaching, where he coached in high school, college, and professional indoor football. During his time as an indoor football head coach, he’s had experience in West Texas, as he has coached the Lubbock Renegades and the Abilene Ruff Riders. John Norman, the owner of the Tall City Black Gold, said Blackshear’s beliefs lines up with his expectations.
“Coach Blackshear represents exactly what Tall City Black Gold stands for, leadership, discipline, and a commitment to developing young men beyond the game,” Norman said. “His experience, credibility, and passion for football will elevate our organization and our community.”
