A new minor league football team has confirmed its stadium lease to play in the city of Midland. The team, Tall City Black Gold, will be playing at Astound Broadband Stadium for its first two seasons.

The Black Gold will play in the Continental Football League, a revival of a defunct NFL rival from the late 1960s. They will play in the South Division alongside the San Angelo Sidewinders, San Antonio Toros and the Austin-based Texas Syndicate.

The agreement in place has the Black Gold as tenants of Astound Broadband Stadium in the 2026 and 2027 season, taking place from May to August. In that time, they will play four home games and will also be granted Scharbauer Sports Complex’s White and Blue auxiliary fields for practices. It is estimated that the total rental fees for the team will be $6,375 per game.

Midland City Council approved the stadium lease by a vote of 6-0. Due to his involvement with the team as a managing partner, Councilman John Norman left the dais before discussion began and abstained from the vote to avoid a conflict of interest.
